Solar Lamp
Safe, renewable light for households that still depend on kerosene or darkness after sunset.
What is this project:
- An R&D project to come up with a low-cost solar lamp that can illuminate a small dwelling and provide light for cooking and studying.
- A working prototype that was developed by a high schooler.
- A working contract with a Taiwanese design house to make the solar lamp compact, more durable, and come up with a final form factor.
- Manufacture of four prototypes, which are to be field tested and a product-market fit established.

Who it is for:
- Households in energy-poor villages who have no live electricity connection to their dwelling.
- They would be using wood or other cheap fuels to light a fire for cooking and to study under dim light, which causes health hazards to all members of the household.
- NGOs in India and other developing countries that would like to place a large order for its manufacture and distribution to the needy.
For NGO field staff
Before a household accepts a lamp, walk through this one-page guide with them — what the lamp is, how to charge and hang it, and the questions to confirm before you leave.
